ITHACA, N.Y. – Cornell University will celebrate the inauguration of its 13th president, Elizabeth Garrett on Friday, Sept. 18, beginning with an installation ceremony on the Cornell Arts Quad from 10:00 a.m. to noon.  Following the ceremony there will be a Community Picnic from noon to 2:00 p.m. on the Ag Quad.  At 3:00 p.m. there will be an academic panel on “Democracy and Inequality” in Bailey Hall.  All events are open to the public.  The festivities will serve as a prelude to Homecoming Weekend.

Inauguration events include:

Installation Ceremony for President Elizabeth Garrett
10 a.m. to noon, Arts Quad
The event is free and open to the public and will be livestreamed on Cornell.edu.  Guests are asked to be seated by 9:45 a.m.

Community Picnic
Noon to 2 p.m., Ag Quad
Please join President Garrett for a community picnic held on the Ag Quad immediately following the ceremony. The community picnic will feature a variety of fare from Cornell Catering and local vendors, performances from student and community groups, and the unveiling of a new ice cream flavor in honor of President Garrett – 24 Garrett Swirl! The rain location for the picnic will be the Ramin Room, Bartels Hall.
Academic panel on “Inequality and Democracy” 
3 p.m. to 5 p.m., Bailey Hall
The panel features Cornell Professors Robert Frank, Suzanne Mettler, Nick Salvatore, Gerald Torres, Eswar Prasad. This panel, moderated by President Garrett, brings together new perspectives to the challenge of inequality for democratic governance.
